How the Lens Tech Works

Using technology developed by one of the world’s top lens manufacturers, the Alleycat features lenses from ZEISS’s Performance lens range. Developed with trail and road riding clarity in mind the performance lens range filters light to give you the optimum view of the environment ahead.

If you’re a MTB or gravel rider, you’ll want to check out our trail lenses. These are perfect for when you’re riding trees, tracks, or around vegetation, where the environment has a predominance of green and orange light that can overwhelm the eye. The trail lens filter reduces green and orange light, giving you greater clarity of the environment, improved depth perception and view of the trail like no other lens can offer.

If road is your vice, you’ll want to check out our road lenses (no surprises there!). In these environments there is a lot of neutral light reflected from the tarmac and a predominance of blue light from artificial lights that can overwhelm the eye. Our road lens filters out some of the blue light, whilst providing an equal distribution of neutral light, improving the road definition, your ability to see potential hazards and levelling up your colour balance perception.

Built to boss the trail and road, the Kingpin takes our market-leading ZEISS lenses and pairs them with a full-frame design guaranteeing style on and off the bike.

Lenses this great deserve frame tech to match, and the Kingpin pulls no punches with its’s Hyperflex frames constructed from super tough, flexible and lightweight TR90.

The Hypergrip nose and tips are designed to keep them locked firmly in place on even the most challenging of terrain.

The Kingpin includes a ZEISS lowlight lens, microfibre bag, and is packed into a premium carry case.

Head out and boss your next ride with the Kingpin featuring ZEISS lenses.

The Kingpin has easily interchangeable lenses and comes with a Zeiss low light lens included. If you want to grab some extra lenses, you can do so here and if you need just an extra low light lens, you can grab it here.

The Kingpin lens ratings are as follows:

Low-Light = S0 (86% VLT)
Amber = S2 (29% VLT)
Violet Chrome = S2 (25% VLT)
Red Chrome = S2 (28% VLT)
Green Chrome = S2 (22% VLT)
Silver Chrome = S3 (19% VLT)
Smoke = S3 (19% VLT)
Photochromic = S0 – S3 (85% – 18% VLT)

The higher the category (and lower the VLT %) the more light the lens blocks, so an S2 lens is often good for if you’re riding in varying light conditions, whilst an S3 lens will perform best if you’re mostly riding bright conditions. You can check out our in-depth video on the lenses further up this page or you can access it here.

Our photochromic lenses are not made by Zeiss, as Zeiss currently doesn’t make a photochromic lens in a shield option. However, they are from one of the worlds leading photochromic lens makers and the optical quality is also fantastic.

We offer a lightweight, low profile optical clip that connects to the Kingpin nose bridge. This can be purchased on its own or with prescription lenses from Zeiss included. You can check all of our prescription options here

The main difference is in the lens technology. The Kingpin trail lens optimises for orange/green environments whereas the snow lens filters out more blue light, as there is a predominance of this in snowy environments. As a result, you’ll get much better definition, contrast and depth perception when in the snow. Also, the snow version doesn’t come with a low-light lens included, which the Kingpin Trail version does.

The glasses have a thin quality feel to them and paired with the zeiss lenses, they’re probably my favourite riding glasses on the market. Plus they look super rad!

High Quality Sunglasses!

I was super excited to get a pair of the kingpins trail knowing the great reviews, high quality and passion invested in this product. I was also concerned about the fit, style considering very few all frames fit my weird head/mtb helmet combo. I’m glad I grabbed a pair. The look is amazing and the clarity, quality of the lenses is superb. I gotta admit they feel a little tight but as soon as I start riding I really forget about that, so it’s not a big issue. I’d say change the design of the arm temple and maybe the end shouldnt point outward.

Kingpin Trail Rx

The Kingpin Trail w/ Optical Clip with Rx lens are legit. I’ve used Rx inserts in googles for years and The Kingpin is the best alternative. When not wearing the googles it left me without vision correction. I’m able to wear the Kingpins even when climbing with a DH helmet. Absolute game changer. They stay put, are very comfortable and fogging is minimal. If you need vision correction these are a great option. I’ll be wearing these way more often than my old google setup.

Melon optics are an awesome Brand what I love about them is their independent style seamlessly coupled with technical excellence - they don’t fog, they stay planted even when shredding the trails, they somehow manage to offer the perfect level of protection no matter the changing light conditions. Blown away 👍 🍉 👌
